Pondering the Puggle

We have a visitor for the next two weeks....
My aunt's puggle, Lucy, will be staying with us while they spend a nice WARM vacation in the sunshine state.  I hope they have a great time.  In the meantime, our herd grew by 4 feet.  I'm sure I'll have some stories to share about Lucy periodically and maybe more pictures as well.

On to the real business of the day....painting #4.
I really admire painters who can keep their paintings loose, yet still evoke a sense of realism.  Sometimes I find myself stuck in that rut of having to paint every last detail.  It's not my intention, it just happens.  I guess that's why it is so important to get up and walk away from the painting.

This painting of a pink zinnia evolved from a wash of alizerin crimson.  How excited I was to see it bloom before my eyes as I added darker values of the pink hue to "indicate" petals.  For awhile I stewed over whether or not to add a background color.  Well, as you can see I did.  Not sure if it was the right thing to do, but what's done is done.  Enjoy!

  1. I really like the peony. I too wish I could be more fluid. I am enjoying watching your progress. Good luck with your house guest. My daughters dog came for a visit 15 months ago and has become apart of the household. :-)

  4. Very nice Gretchen... add me to list of wishing I could be more fluid.

I really like what you have done and my imagination takes me to an arrangement just the way you did this "Zinnia" with the background making the flowers pop beautifully.

Have fun with your 4 feet guest. LOL

  8. Thanks for stopping by Gaylynn! Glad you are enjoying the challenge.

Crystal, it is a bit sad when Lucy leaves. We've watched her before and my boys really have a good time with her. Puggles seem to be good dogs for kids.

Mr. Puggle....glad you stopped by. Funny how your profile pic looks like Lucy:)

Maria, thank you. I wan't sure about the color combo. Still wondering if I should've left the background white.

Dors...detail is your expertise!! But it's fun to break out of that, I know.

    Thanks Franz! Ciao!

Pat, I agree....I'm just not sold on the background...almost too generic. I pondered over different colors, something to make the aliz. crimson pop. Maybe I should've left it white.
