Painters Block

2011© Gretchen Bjornson

How many days are left in this challenge?  I've hit a rough spot.  I suppose I should be thankful I've had as many agreeable paintings as I've had so far.  I am.

It's so disappointing to sit down with big expectations and then watch it slowly decline.  This one isn't quite as disappointing as yesterdays.  I think this piece still has possibilities.  The background needs work and the flowers need "something".  They just seem dull.  Yellow is a tough color for me for some reason.  How do you make yellow sing?

This is #24.  Four days, four paintings, four flowers to go.

  1. Don't give up are doing a wonderful job. It's very hard to keep up daily painting...

if I can suggest... maybe getting some really dark darks in under the daffodils in the BG should make them pop.

  2. Maybe more orangey colors in the shade of the flowers? I admire you for doing this 28 day challenge! I'd like to know what you learned from it when it's finished.

  3. Well, it's certainly nice to have a cheering section. You guys keep me motivated and I'm thankful for that!

I'll have to darken up the background a bit and add some orange.

  4. You need to quit being so hard on yourself! You can fix it to your satisfaction :-)

  5. You are so right Crystal. I vow to be less negative from here on out!

  6. Don't look at the uglies, look at all the beauties you've produced! None of us (even the world famous and rich ones) have 100% winners :)

  7. You have been painting up a storm! I agree- maybe some more dark in the background and I am a big fan of highlights.
    Nice work as usual!

  8. Hi Personally i hope you keep the challenge going, so i can enjoy your paintings.
This painting is has great movment and compositon.

  9. I'm with Dors ..selective strong darks under the daffs will make them pop..
Yellows I try to use transparent yellow and quite a few glazes :)

  10. I recently read somewhere that you need to darken the darks and whiten the whites. Sounds easy!

  11. Dear Gretchen,
Please never push yourself too hard. Who expects you too much and sits with you? If you, please stop it. I'm very happy to share joy in your any work. "Enjoy" painting. Don't chase up results or expectations. Results will follow you:).
    Kind regards, Sadami

  12. Great suggestions. I will file them away for later reference.
Thank you for all your comments and I'm not giving up!

  13. Hi Gretchen, I saw your post through Rhonda's blog and came to check out yours. Did you find that nice yellow you wanted to "sing"? Try Winsor Newton's Bismuth Yellow; it's a great bright yellow Happy painting. Nice 28 day progress!
