Black Eyed Susan Part II

I'm working on another painting of Black Eyed Susans.  This one will be traveling to Tennessee.
I've discovered I really enjoy creating backgrounds in which things that weren't in the original sketch appear through multiple washes and the painting of negative shapes.  For example, indications of leaves and stems are appearing in this one.  I've yet to master this technique and it just seems to happen in some of my floral paintings.  I believe the lost and found edges make it really interesting for the viewer.

At any rate, I am at the mid-way point with this piece and hope to build more of the darker values which hopefully will bring out the highlights in the petals.

  1. Your flower paintings are so amazing, the Black Eyed Susan's are one of my favorites, still blooming in my garden and I haven't the heart to cut them back yet, can't wait to see the finished painting.

  3. Maria, I just not cut back my black eyed susans. But I'm looking forward to them multiplying for next year's season! Thank you!

Pat...I should have this one wrapped up in a few days or less.....I need to catch up on my housework today first. Thanks for being a regular visitor!

  4. Gretchen-
This is looking good and you are doing a lot with your negative shapes in the leafy areas. The mass of leaves is the toughest part for me- knowing when to stop and what to leave a little less defined.
    Have fun with the housework-

  5. Sheryl....yes, the mass of leaves has always been a task, although I'm learning painting by painting how to tackle it. I think that's why I haven't painted many trees yet. Fun and housework really shouldn't be in the same sentence, wouldn't you agree?;) I'm hoping to post this one as finished sometime before Friday. Thanks again for your kind comment.
